BLACK - Black (A&M) Black (real name Colin Vearncombe) loves to deal in irony. His first two albums, titled Wonderful Life and Comedy, are unremittingly bleak as he bares his marriage break-up and misery. Three years after the brilliant but commercial flop Comedy, life's looking up - he's remarried - and guess what he calls his third album.
Sweet Breath of Your Rapture, Fly Up to the Moon (a duet with Sam Brown) and She's My Best Friend reflect his sunnier disposition but Learning How to Hate and Listen show he can still be, well, black. With lyrics tinged with pathos and melodies that gradually unveil their charms, Black is bound to grow on you.
RATING: 7 out of 10.
